The use of instant messaging within corporate environments has continued to grow steadily and many organizations now accept IM as a viable communications tool. In a corporate environment, it can enhance collaboration and real-time communication among employees, partners and customers. However, as with all communication tools, IM carries inherent threats that you can’t ignore:
Productivity erosion – Employee abuse of IM can create productivity problems for even the most vigilant organizations. If you aren’t monitoring and filtering your IM traffic, you cannot know how it is being used.
Sharing Files – The ability to share files via IM raise concerns over data privacy and the loss of intellectual property. Sharing audio or video files can result in a degrading of network performance.
SPIM – The IM equivalent of SPAM brings with it the same threats to your network and your employees’ time.
Worms, Trojans and other Malware – Unmanaged IM traffic is the new playground for attacks because IM programs can be publically accessed and are not encrypted. If you aren’t securing your IM traffic, you are leaving your networks open to a variety of threats.
